WHY IS PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER SAID TO BE GREEN AND LOW-CARBON ENERGY?
Photovoltaic power generation has significant energy, environmental protection and economic benefits and is one of the best green energy sources.
Under average sunshine conditions in Guangdong Province, installing a 1-kilowatt distributed photovoltaic system can generate 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity in one year, reducing coal (standard coal) usage by approximately 308 kilograms and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 0.84 tons.
According to the research results of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF): in terms of carbon dioxide emission reduction effect, installing 1 square meter of photovoltaic power generation system is equivalent to planting 100 square meters of trees. At present, the development of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic power generation will be one of the effective means to fundamentally solve environmental problems such as haze and acid rain.
What do you think of the news that "the production of photovoltaic cell modules will produce a large amount of pollutants"?
The production of photovoltaic cell modules includes several industrial chain links such as high-purity polysilicon, silicon ingots and wafers, photovoltaic cells and photovoltaic modules. Reports of related pollution mainly refer to by-products produced in the production of high-purity polysilicon, the raw material for photovoltaic modules. The production of high-purity polysilicon mainly uses the modified Siemens method, which converts
metallurgical grade silicon into trichlorosilane and then adds hydrogen to reduce it to solar-grade polysilicon. In addition, silicon tetrachloride is formed as a by-product. Silicon tetrachloride decomposes into silicic acid and hydrogen chloride when exposed to humid air. If not handled properly, it will cause pollution problems. However, the improved Siemens method currently used by polysilicon manufacturers in my country can achieve closed-circuit production, recycling the by-product silicon tetrachloride and tail gas (hydrogen and chlorine) to achieve clean production. At present, the recycling rate of polysilicon companies for silicon tetrachloride, hydrogen chloride, and hydrogen that may cause pollution has reached more than 99%. Therefore, the mature modified Siemens production technology can fully meet environmental protection requirements and will not cause environmental pollution problems.
